On the 15th & 16th of April 2021, The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute (NJI) organized the Maiden Nigerian Admiralty Law Colloquium. The theme of this year’s colloquium was “Achieving Maritime Safety, Security and Shipping Development (‘TRIPOD-S’) through Enforcement and the Implementation of the Deep Blue Project: The Role of the Judiciary and State Actors”


Kenechukwu the Executive Secretary of Sabi Law Foundation was a Resource Person/ Discussant on the topic ‘The Deep Blue Project: The Role of State Actors in Achieving Maritime Safety, Security and Shipping Development in the Gulf of Guinea Waters, specifically in Nigeria.’

According to him, considering the contributions of the maritime sector to the sustainability of the global economy, it is imperative that efforts at global, regional, and national levels must be in top gear to ensure that global trade, the majority of which is carried out on the sea, is seamless and with minimum hiccups and obstructions. He advocated for an amendment of the Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offences Act 2019 and also for an academic fellowship in Maritime Studies. He stressed the need for for interagency cooperation for the “Deep Blue Project” to succeed.

Key stakeholders and other resource persons present include; Hon. Justice Monica Dangban-Mensem, President of the Court of Appeal; Dr. Bashir Jamoh, DG NIMASA; Professor Muhammed Tawfiq Ladan, DG NIALS, Prof. Ernest Ojukwu, SAN, Fmr. DDG Nigerian Law School; Jean Chaizor Anishere, SAN; Adedolapo Akinrele, SAN and a host of other seasoned experts and stakeholders in the sector. Justices of the Court of Appeal; Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom state; Judges of the Federal High Court and of littoral states were also participants at the colloquium.
