In 2009, the Lagos State Magistrates’ Courts got a new rule book. It guides and regulates all civil proceedings (trials and court activities)in the Magistrates’ courts across Lagos State. It has 24 parts (Orders) focusing on specific issues, including; Commencement of Proceedings; Ordinary summons, particulars, defence, counterclaims and admission; Summary summons; Parties; Persons under disability; Change of parties; Service; Assignment, Transfer and case stated; Third party procedure;  and Amendment.

Lagos State Magistrates’ Courts (Civil Procedure) Rules also covers specific issues like; Application and directions in the course of proceedings; Consolidation of proceedings and selected actions; Discontinuance by claimant; Special witness; Payment into Court in action; Evidence and witnesses; Affidavit and documentary evidence; Mediation and conciliation; Trial; Oral Address; Judgments and orders; Fees; Costs; Receivers; and Custody of money. This rule is different from the Lagos State High Courts (Civil Procedure) Rules 2019 meant for the High Courts in Lagos State and not the Magistrate Courts.
